Karen MacDougall is an artist and designer. She trained as an architect at the University of Edinburgh, specialising ultimately in light, colour and space.
Her architectural background means she is able to both explore and identify opportunities & parameters, create design briefs and visualise / draw solutions, then draw on experience as a professional artist to create and make. Her understanding of materials means that she is not limited in her choice of medium. Some work is pictorial, even graphical, while some is abstract and left for the viewer to explore.
She worked in architectural design practices in London before being invited to become a lecturer at University College London in 1987, before establishing a successful private practice in 1990. Work has been exhibited extensively around the UK, Paris, Geneva, New York and Samarkand. Since moving to Cumbrian Countryside in '94 with her family she has concentrated on art and design projects - drawing, painting and designing in 2D and 3D. A number of her paintings have been used as book & magazine covers, and published as cards.
